🪦 "SEO isn't dead. But the content site model is"

Says Gael from Authority Hackers, plus the launch of PENGU and the week's digital asset news

📝 Patey’s Update

Back in July of last year I published a post discussing why Marc Roca thought content websites are dead (and that you should focus on ecommerce):

Yesterday, Gael Breton from Authority Hackers posted on linkedin that back in 2014 (when they started the business), building content sites was the perfect business model for new entrepreneurs. But now they think the content site model is dead and they are closing their flagship courses.

I stopped trying to rank content sites back in 2018 shortly after selling the software review site Funnel Engine, and I moved into newsletters which became my full-time business for several years.

I created content (such as this), and a paid product on newsletter businesses and why you should start one. But my opinion on this quickly changed in Q2 of last year when newsletter sponsorship revenue fell off a cliff.

So what do I recommend people focus on today?

Building real brands that sell their own products or services. Whether that’s an ecommerce business, a software business or an agency or local business. Anything where the NAP is actually real. And then using newsletters on beehiiv as a top of funnel.

In terms of SEO today, unless you have an incredibly powerful domain (DR60+) you’re likely not going to be able to rank for the big keywords you could previously. So work on getting authority links that move the needle (or a domain that already has them on Odys). Otherwise focus on long-tail question type keywords that tools like Topical Map identify really well, and then leverage other people’s high DR sites (parasite SEO).

Over in crypto land, yesterday it was all about the launch of the Pudgy Penguin $PENGU token which gave out 51% of its now $3B total value to the community. I first wrote about the penguins back in July last year:

But I sold my Lil Pudgy 7 months ago as had given up on NFTs after getting crushed holding them for token launches (such as my Tensorian). Fortunately, me moving my Pudgy between chains through the Layer Zero bridge netted me a decent claim:

You can see most of the allocations for all the NFT assets and participation rewarded here, and I posted in the Skool community how you can check to see if you are able to claim any:

I’m actually now open to selling the skool.com/crypto community if you or a crypto company you know could be interested - it’s ranking for some decent terms as can be seen in this post on X:

I’ve not analysed any deals/listings this week, they will return in the new year. Thanks for continuing to subscribe and read my emails, hope you have a great holiday season.

Cheers!

Richard

As we learned in business school, the Rule of Seven states that a prospect needs to interact with a brand at least seven times before they’re likely to take action or make a purchase. With influencer marketing, brand visibility should be valued as much as performance. This is why I price on CPM starting at $70 for a single placement, which drops to $30 in a bundle.

That’s it for this week, until next time, catch me in the community.

Cheers!
